Salut!

This winter, we're bringing our most popular class ever to Brooklyn -- a fun and innovative intermediate-level French class in which students read and discuss three French-language comics -- including Tintin, naturellement, and Spirou et Fantasio (pictured below).

Comics are almost pure dialogue, so they're a great way to learn colloquial French and to build your reading and speaking skills. Each week we'll look at the plots and cultural context of what we're reading, and the instructor (Maurice Jean-Baptiste Brochet, from Paris) will link the reading and discussion with the review of grammar, vocabulary and idiomatic expressions.

The course is designed to be a bridge between our Advanced Beginner class (our Level 2) and our Conversation class (Level 4). Students should be able to speak and understand at a basic level, even if they aren't perfectly fluent and make some mistakes.

Please note that you will also need to buy the three French-language comics for approximately $50. This price includes tax and your 20% student discount.

Is this class for you?

Our French Intermediate course is designed for people who are already familiar with the basics of French grammar and are fairly conversant in the present, simple past, and simple future tenses. Basic grammar is reviewed as needed, and more advanced grammar is presented (including the dreaded subjunctive tense), but the second half of each lesson is dedicated to conversation practice. The class will be conducted entirely in French.

About our courses

Idlewild’s language courses are both fun and practical, and have been recommended by Daily Candy and New York Magazine.

The classes are taught in our beautiful new space in Brooklyn, not a stuffy classroom, by dynamic and experienced native speakers. Class size is limited to 12, so everyone gets a chance to speak in every session.

This French class will be taught by Maurice Jean-Baptiste Brochet, a native of Paris with more than 10 years’ experience teaching in New York, including at Berlitz and the Rennert School. Maurice employs a dynamic method that emphasizes grammar and vocabulary but is focused primarily on spoken profiency and oral comprehension.

There are no make-up classes. On the first day of class, each student will receive a syllabus that lists the weekly assignments so you can keep up with your studies if you have to miss a class.

If you wish to cancel your registration, you must contact Idlewild by telephone or email at least seven days before the start date of your class to receive a refund.

If you wish to postpone your registration to a later session, you must contact Idlewild by telephone or email at least three days before the start date of your class to receive a credit toward a future session (good for one year).
